Recipe: Tofurkey Twizzlers

Another childhood favourite – the infamous Turkey Twizzler. Remember these? Spiral shaped fake turkey meat with a barbecuey flavour, a staple until Jamie Oliver got them banned. I’m sure some people are still angry about that. After making meat-free mini ‘chicken’ kievs, I started brainstorming about other classics that I could make vegetarian. Turkey Twizzlers immediately popped into my head, and I set about attempting to make something similar. Tofurkey Twizzlers was born. (Ok, I didn’t actually use Tofurkey, but it sounds better than ‘Turkey Twizzlers without the turkey’.)

The shape is a bit hard to do hence why mine look a bit dodgy, and you might have to play around with the amount of BBQ sauce you use, but these taste good and Jamie Oliver (hopefully) won’t be knocking down my door to ban them!

Ingredients

Vegetarian sausages – I used Cauldron Cumberland sausages as they taste more ‘chicken-y’ than sausage-y

BBQ sauce

1 egg

Breadcrumbs

You will also need:

Wooden or metal skewers

Method

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees Celcius (fan assisted).
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the egg and a good dollop of BBQ sauce (as much as you want).
  3. Stick a wooden or metal skewer through each sausage (carefully) until it is all the way through.
  4. With a sharp small knife, cut the sausages into a spiral, rotating the sausage on a stick until you’ve got to the bottom.
  5. Carefully and gently pull the sausage apart so that it looks more like a spiral on the stick.
  6. Leaving it on the stick, dip the sausage in the egg and BBQ sauce mix until coated.
  7. Dip the sausage in breadcrumbs evenly.
  8. Place your skewers into the oven and bake until golden brown.
  9. Carefully take them off the sticks and enjoy.
